More than 1,100 professionals from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta, Microsoft, Mistral, and other frontier AI organizations have signed a public statement calling on governments to prepare for the future of Automated AI Research. Rather than demanding an immediate slowdown, the signatories are asking policymakers to develop the technical and governance tools needed if AI systems begin accelerating AI research itself.

The concern is straightforward.

If AI systems become capable of assisting researchers in designing and improving future AI models, the pace of progress could accelerate far beyond today’s development cycle.

The statement argues that governments and industry should prepare before such capabilities arrive, instead of reacting afterward.

Over the past few years, AI has learned to write code, summarize documents, generate images, and assist with software development. The next step may be even more significant.
